The Scottish Fisheries Museum flagship vessel restoration

3rd Aug 2022

Brouns & Co are delighted to be supplying paint to The Scottish Fisheries Museum where preserving the wood and the appearance of their flagship vessel, Reaper, is a top priority. Although modern paints aim to protect the surface from external threats, they found water or oil that leaches out from within the wood or a break in the painted surface allowing moisture in can cause the paint to bubble up and lose adhesion. In restoring a historic vessel, they also decided the use of modern chemicals is inconsistent with historical authenticity. They turned to linseed oil paint that has been used in ship building for centuries.

The restoration team tested linseed oil paint using Brouns & Co Whiteley and Chatsworth Blue for the bearer which has now been painted. Further tests have been completed on Brouns & Co Blackout which is now going to be used to restore the deck and hull. The Scottish Fisheries Museum is located in Anstruther, Fife, if you want to plan a visit and you can find their website here https://www.scotfishmuseum.org/
