Cambridge No 7 (2)
£7.50 – £155.00
Based on the zinc white colour found on a window salvaged from Cambridge, this used to be our whitest white, before Project White was introduced in 2019. Original window obtained from the Charles Brooking Collection.
Don’t forget to order your Raw Linseed Oil and Balsam Turpentine if you need to thin the first coat.
If you would prefer a ready mixed primer, we would recommend Primer #1

We at Smith & Garratt have been looking for a paint to replace the old white lead. As specialist surveyors in the heritage sector, we see the damage that modern paints – even micro-porous paints – have done in the last half century. There was nothing to touch white lead for its benign effect on the underlying timber … until Brouns & Co. Effectively, this is the paint used for 250 years until modern petrochemical paints arrived. Just boiled linseed oil and pigment. The linseed oil – having a smaller molecular size than water – penetrates the timber further than water can, and protects it. The pigment provides the aesthetic and prevents bleaching; Brouns’s pigments are consistent and stable. It has to be applied with care, not slapped on; and each coat takes time to sink in and dry; but exterior joinery won’t need coating every three to five years … the interval is more like eight to ten years. Best of all, the timber will still be good at the next time, and the next. At last we have found the replacement for white lead, and we won’t be using anything else on exterior timber.

For. This a fantastic paint the after effect is unreal Against. It takes a long long time to dry like forever, and it has a strong smell which takes 3/4 days to clear Overall it is worth the wait and the smell for the end result is supper

Beautiful paint, and a small tin goes a long way – but wait for a warm day before using it…

If you manage to speak to Jess, she is very helpful and understands the meaning and importance of the two words above!

Goes on very smoothly and dries quite quickly as long as you paint on thin layers

I decided to buy this paint for my interior windows having already painted the exterior windows with Green Grey linseed paint. It is a bright white and looks lovely, very on par with modern day white colours. I added some corsik drying agent to it, which worked well in making it dry within a day. The only thing I felt was different was how thick the paint felt in comparison to the other colour and that its finish was more glossy. I ended up thinning it slightly with some pure turpentine to avoid brush marks. I don’t know if this was because of the drying agent or just because there was more white pigment in the mix. Either way my windows look beautiful now! I will be purchasing more to paint all my other interior windows.

The ordering process of the paint was excellent. It arrived in very good time and well packaged. However I’ve been unable to complete my project whilst awaiting a query I sent via the web site. I found the paint to be extremely thick even after a thorough stirring. I have followed instructions to prepare the initial priming coat and that has applied well. But I’m just unsure if the thickness of the paint is normal so wanted confirmation. After the preparation of my wood planing, sanding tack cloth dust removal I’m reluctant to move on until getting a reply to my query. Being deaf I’m unable to use the phone so left with frustratingly slow emails. I’m going to have to get someone to ring for me. So sorry but I’ve only given four stars.

Why cant you buy this in every DIY shop? It leaves a great finish and really lets your wood breathe, plus it smells great when you are painting. Painting with gloss paint is akin to wrapping potatoes in cling film … why wood frames have been rotting for the last half century just creating a boon for plastic windows. This paint is the saviour for wooden windows.

Fantastic product, really impressed. Only issue was the colour of the paint is nothing like the colour on the website or the printed colour chart! Still looks great though and can see that it will provide years of protection for my windows.
